TSRI and UNCTAD announced to promote BCG economy

Thailand announces collaboration between TSRI and UNCTAD to promote BCG economic model at the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.

During 25-26 October 2022, the Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO) represents Thailand at UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) 2022-2023 Inter-sessional Panel in Geneva, Switzerland

Mr Shamika N. Sirimanne, head of the CSTD secretariat, expressed appreciation to Thailand and in particular Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI) for the collaboration with UNCTAD on STI Capacity Building for female researchers and entrepreneurs on the BCG economic model.

NXPO representative delivered Thailand’s statement on “technology and innovation for cleaner and more productive and competitive production”, emphasizing Thailand’s commitment to promote international collaboration under BCG economic model for sustainable and equitable development.

Ambassador Rongvudhi Virabutr, deputy permanent representative of Thailand to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva gave remarks at the launching event of “STI Capacity Building for Female Researchers and Entrepreneurs on the BCG Economic Model” which is a collaboration program between TSRI, UNCTAD, and permanent mission of Thailand to the United Nations.

This program aims to promote capacity building for researchers and female entrepreneurs in developing countries to adapt principles of BCG model for sustainable development.

Interested member countries are invited to participate in the program which will be held in Thailand during mid-2023.

Thailand will invite applications for the project by female entrepreneurs and researchers from developing countries to participate in the project in Thailand in June 2023.

Joining in the projects, applicants will learn from Thai female entrepreneurs, policymakers, and experts on how to apply technology and innovation that align with the BCG Model. Participants will pay visits to BCG enterprises and some female-led enterprises, including technology enterprises, to enhance their understanding of the BCG model and the benefits it can bring about to the companies.

The project is expected to promote the inclusive and sustainable development at national level through the engagement of female researchers and entrepreneurs in developing and using science, technology and innovation. Our project is aimed at building cooperation on enhancing a path towards sustainability which would link knowledge on science, technology, innovation to biodiversity and cultural diversity.

“We hope to share our lessons on how to build the internal strength of each developing country and distribute benefits to community.”

Mr Rongvudhi also mentioned that this collaborative program aims to establish a network of researchers and female entrepreneurs to work together under BCG model.

“We aspire to see this network grow to form strong and cohesive policies based on the sharing of
expertise and hope that these policies will be designed to suitably complement their national, regional and international contexts.”

Thailand hopes to see the CSTD become an invaluable part of the ECOSOC and an indispensable subsidiary body to support member states in accelerating their SDGs achievement.
