BE Petrothai urges industry to adopt advanced enclosed ground flare technology

In recognition of Thailand Environment Day on December 4, BE Petrothai Group, one of the country’s leading engineering service providers, called on the petroleum and petrochemical sector to accelerate adoption of enclosed ground flare (EGF) technology.

The company emphasized EGF as a key solution for reducing environmental and community impacts while supporting the industry’s drive toward net-zero emissions.

Flaring is a critical technology in the petroleum and petrochemical industries, serving as a standard method for safely disposing of waste gases that cannot be recycled or reused. By minimizing the release of hazardous chemicals into the atmosphere, flares help reduce potential greenhouse gas impacts and protect the health of surrounding communities. As such, flaring remains a key component of internationally recognized environmental management practices within the industry.

However, traditional elevated flares—characterized by tall stacks with visible flames and smoke—can generate public concern and cause light and visual disturbances for nearby communities, thus illustrating the importance of more advanced and community-friendly solutions.

The EGF, introduced by BE Petrothai Group, incorporates the latest technology from John Zink, a global leader in combustion and emission control. It delivers four key advantages: no black smoke, no visible flame, no light emissions day or night, and no disruptive noise or vibration during operation.

These key advantages help the petroleum and petrochemical industries significantly reduce environmental and community impacts, including concerns related to PM2.5 emissions. At the same time, EGF technology supports the sector’s progress toward corporate sustainability goals and long-term net-zero commitments.

BE Petrothai Group and its partners have been sourcing and supplying EGF solutions to leading petroleum and petrochemical companies since 2017. This includes the installation at the Map Ta Phut LNG Terminal 1 (LMPT1) in Rayong, operated by PTT LNG Co., Ltd., which has now been fully completed and is in operation.

Tarm added that the shift to EGF technology has become essential for the petroleum and petrochemical industries—not only to meet environmental regulations, but also to respond to the urgent need for collective action to reduce operational impacts on the environment and address global warming issues. While the transition requires preparation and time, he emphasized that it is a necessary and responsible step for the industry to take.
